## Frequently asked questions

Looking for coverage details? [Insurance, in plain language](https://nidoaba.com/insurance/).

### What is ABA therapy?

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. It breaks skills into small, teachable steps, uses positive reinforcement to build them, and tracks progress so the plan can be adjusted.

ABA is commonly used to support autistic children and children with related developmental needs, in areas like communication, social skills, play and daily living.

### What ages do you work with?

We work with children, from toddlers through school age. Our early intervention program focuses on toddlers and preschoolers. Tell us your child's age when you reach out and we'll talk about whether we're a good fit.

### How many hours a week will my child need?

It varies from child to child. After the assessment, your BCBA recommends a number of hours based on your child's needs, your goals and your family's schedule. Insurance authorization can also affect hours. We'll go over the recommendation with you before anything starts.

### Does my child need a diagnosis?

For insurance to cover ABA, plans usually need a diagnosis, most often autism spectrum disorder, from a qualified provider. Many plans also ask for a referral or prescription for ABA.

If you don't have a diagnosis yet, reach out anyway. We can talk through next steps.

### Is in-home or clinic-based therapy better?

Neither one is better for every child. In-home sessions are great for working on home routines. Clinic sessions offer structure and chances to practice with peers. Many families use a mix. Your BCBA will recommend a setting after the assessment, and your preferences matter.

### How involved will I be as a parent?

Very involved, in a good way. Parents and caregivers are part of the team. You'll help set goals, have regular parent training with your BCBA, and learn strategies to use between sessions.

### Do you offer services in Spanish?

Tell us your preferred language when you reach out, and we'll let you know what we can offer.

### Do you take my insurance?

We're working to get in-network with New Mexico Medicaid (Turquoise Care) and major commercial plans. Reach out and we'll check your coverage. Private pay is also available.

### How do you make sure therapy is a positive experience for my child?

We use positive reinforcement, follow your child's interests, and pay close attention to their comfort and willingness to take part. If something isn't working for your child, we change it. You're always welcome to ask questions about anything in your child's program.

### How soon can we get started?

It depends mostly on insurance and paperwork, like a diagnosis, referral and authorization. The first step is to reach out. We'll get back to you within one business day and keep you updated at every step.
